Book Review: “Happy People Read and Drink Coffee”

The main character of “Happy People Read and Drink Coffee” is a woman who had a perfectly happy life. Diana owned a literary café with a funny (as for me) name: “Happy people read and Drink Coffee”, and had a happy family with a caring husband, and a small, beautiful daughter. But one day her happiness was destroyed by a tragic car accident, her beloved family died. Felling broken and haunted by her memories of a happy family, she lost her mention of life. And though she still has a loving friend, parents, and café, she is broken inside. In this situation, she decided to go to another country to find peace for her suffering soul.

Spoiler

There she found love. Edward was a clear jerk with a stupid love problem in his life, but his strange love helped her find her way home for treatment.

My thought about “Happy People Read and Drink Coffee”

My thought about “Happy People Read and Drink Coffee”

I like how this book was written. The story is enjoyable and exciting. You will not have a problem with reading it, because all characters are described well, and the author did not lose logic in the plot, which can happen in some books.

As for me, it was interesting to watch how the protagonists developed and search for their own idea for living. I think this book is more about our sense of living. Sometimes we don’t notice this great gift from life, such as family or friends, and unfortunately, this important part of our life is only visible only when we lost this.

This is a difficult book at the beginning because of the deep grief of the protagonist. For the first few pages, I thought about my family and wondered what would happen to me in a similar situation. Can I survive after so big loss? I really don’t know. I don’t know how to start again if I would lose everything that I loved. However, Diana found the strength to start again. Through the pain, she tries to live anyway, even when she says “I died”, her spirit to fight makes her a strong and unique person.

I was happy when she could start her life again, but in the end, I had this feeling that this book didn’t have a proper ending. I wanted to have a different ending, but maybe this ending is more realistic.

Part of the “Happy People Read and Drink Coffee” that I don’t like

What don’t I like in this book? I really didn’t like the male character that was described as a good person. I didn’t like Edward, his behavior, his motivation. He was such an annoying guy that I even thought even stop reading the book. I understood Diane’s motivation, but I didn’t understand Edward’s.

My recommendation

But in the end, I think this book is worth reading. My opinion is that the novel has the spirit of France. This scent of French books and coffee makes reading more emotional and gives an interesting impression. When I was reading this book, I thought, that would like to go to this café, drink coffee and read a book on a warm summer morning.

I recommend reading this book. I am sure you will enjoy this interesting story and the spirit of France.
